California - knows how to party!

Posted by Gabe Davies [Pro Surfer,Snowboarder] on September 14th, 2009

I’m over here in California for the Surfer Poll (Tues 15th) as Waveriders, our film has been nominated for best documentary and I have been nominated in the Heavy Water ‘big wave’ category. The Surfer Poll is the most highly regarded awards night in the surfing world so I am buzzing to get two nominations.

I spent the day down at Trestles for the Hurley Pro WCT event where we had fun looking 3-5ft surf at Lower Trestles. The event is fantastic, great organisation, fun crowd and the showcase of high performance surfing. Not surprisingly perhaps as the prize pot has just gone up to a record breaking 105,000 dollars for the event winner. Well-done Mr Bob Hurley!! The last heat of the day saw Rob Machado, the wildcard; take out Taj Burrows in the last seconds of an epic heat. Other highlights included Kelly riding radical equipment and scoring two 9-point rides and a clash of the Europeans Aritz and Jeremy. Aritz just got pipped at the post by Jeremy’s last second wave, after leading the heat till the bitter end.

I’ll keep you posted on what’s going on as the event is due to run again on Monday and then will likely go on hold till the swell peaks again at the end of the week.
Cheers, Gabe
