The weekend turned out to be both an eventful and successful weekend at the Protest English Surfing Championships held at Watergate Bay. The first obstacle was dodging the volcanic ash; luckily my flight back from Australia was confirmed and I landed back in England a couple of days before the event to get ready for the 9 degrees water that awaited my arrival. Thankfully Snugg wetsuits were able to make me up some suits so I would be ready for the long, cold days ahead.
It seems that it was not just my feet that froze (with the decision not to wear boots for the event) but also my brain, as I have little recollection of my free surfs and heats and they all seem to meld into one! I was preferring the high tide surfs as the waves seemed to have a bit more of a wedge to them, however every heat seemed to be at low tide so my focus was to just get two scoring waves in the 15 minutes we were allocated. I managed to win my heats through to the final with my semi final heat being my highest scoring heat.
The final was held in tough conditions with two foot onshore conditions with the majority of waves closing out. It was difficult to pick off some waves which allowed good scoring potential however I managed to get a few waves which allowed me to complete one or two manoeuvres each wave. Luckily it was enough to take the win followed by Hannah Harding, Karma Worthington and Lucy Campbell respectively.
