SURFER POLL AWARD - IS COMING HOME WITH ME!

Posted by Gabe Davies on September 18th, 2009

I had an epic night at the Surfer Poll Awards. It’s the biggest night out in surfing. The most prestigious awards –its like the Oscars, hence the 1000 plus audience was like a who’s who of the surf world. A slick show, broadcast live, showbiz mixed with surfers, it’s a funny combination. Boys suited and booted, girls glitzy and glamorous!

I was nominated in two categories, the first Heavy Water, the big wave award, which was an honour to be recognised among the four best big wave surfers. The accolade eventually went to Nathan Fletcher. The next nomination was for Best Documentary -Waveriders. Lauren my wife wrote it and the director Joel was there also. We honestly thought the prize would go elsewhere, so we relaxed into our seats to just enjoy the night. The whole event is daunting once you are in the room and nominated. World Champs, legends and surf stars took turns collecting their prizes so when they announced our category and called us up there to collect ours we were so shocked.

I couldn’t believe we’d won. Joel and Lauren spoke first to loud cheers and I finally stopped jumping up and down to thank to Quiksilver, Gravis and the surfers in the film.

We were sitting at a table with Kelly, who won best surfer again (I think for the 13th time!!!) which is incredible. He was stoked and surprised for us. So our table took two prizes home. We are staying with Pat O’Connell for the duration of the Hurley Pro and he was buzzing for us. He hugged us half way up to the stage he was so excited. He’s been our lucky mascot and big supporter for years.

Back stage we had interviews with Fuel TV, a photo call, beers and a massive party to enjoy. Many shaking hands and congrats from friends, fans and strangers!! Epic. We are the first Europeans to win an award at this event so to bring home the bacon tastes all the more sweet.

Sarah Beardmore scores her first front cover in Curl Magazine

Posted by Soulsports HQ on September 9th, 2009

UK ripper Sarah Beardmore has just contacted Soulsports HQ to share the fruits of her labour (Mentawai’s boat trip, hardly labour really), with top honours courtesy of New Zealand surf mag Curl.

In Sarah’s own words… “Good news I got my first cover shot! Curl magazine, so stoked considering the high profile girls on my trip. Think it would be the first British girl to get a non UK cover.”

Go girl…

Looks like Soulsports aren’t the only ones hitting double figures as Extreme celebrate a decade of broadcasting and a lot more besides…

London, Tuesday 21st July 2009: Extreme Sports Channel, the world’s first television channel dedicated to the action sports lifestyle, is celebrating ten years of broadcasting with special activity this September and October.

It kicks off on 17th September with programming following those who are dedicated to the waves and breaks in Beach Ball weekend, a surfer’s paradise running from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th September. Top shows include Monster Waves of Europe, in which professional surfer and film-maker Robby Seeger and his crew locate, hunt and conquer Europe’s most monstrous waves (five half hour specials shown across Sat & Sun from 15:00). Enjoy All Day Apres on 8th -11th October with Extreme Sports Channel’s weekend for snow lovers, with skiing and snowboarding action courtesy of the Winter X Games 2009 and Ride Guide Snow 2008, high profile events attracting the best the snow scene can offer, plus Tara Dakides Profile, looking at the career of the American snowboarding phenomenon.

Finally, we finish off with a Medal Mash Up on 15th -18th October, as Extreme brings you the best of the best, competing in all the essential action sports competitions, including footage from the 2009 Summer X Games – the renowned annual multi-discipline competition held in LA and, along with its sister Winter event, arguably the Olympics of the extreme sports world. In addition, the Summer Dew Tour showcases the cream of skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross with a staggering $2.5 million competition prize at stake; whilst the global professional action sports circuit LG Action Sports Tour features skateboarding, inline skating, freeskiing, BMX and freestyle motocross.

“For the past 10 years, Extreme Sports Channel has been the champion for a whole host of extreme sports,” says Channel Manager Tim MacMullen. “We’ve brought our viewers spectacular coverage of the biggest and best events and featured the people, places and attitude that have made action sports the global juggernaut they are today. Like a lot of the sports we feature, we’ve grown up, but we’ve also stayed fresh and relevant. We’re looking forward to another 10 years of success.”

Ten Years of Extreme starts on Extreme Sports Channel (Sky 419, Virgin 527) on Thursday 17th September at 19:00.
