BA have changed the rules regarding baggage allowance on their flights, effective as of the 1st August 2009.
For short haul economy flights the new checked baggage allowance is one piece of luggage INCLUDING ski equipment. This one piece can weigh up to 23kg with max dimensions of: 90cm x 75cm x 43cm. If this piece is above 23kg but less than 32kg you will be charged £30 extra weight charge. If this piece is above 32kg it will be charged as ‘freight’. If you want to check in a second or third piece of luggage, the charge is £28 per bag if booked online, and £32 per bag if done at the airport.
Economy passengers travelling to Canada or USA will still be able to take 2 bags with no extra cost (including a ski bag) weighing up to 23kg per bag.
Hand luggage restrictions remain the same, i.e. one piece plus a laptop bag/handbag (a ski boot bag would therefor be OK as the one piece).
These new baggage rules are relevant to all bookings made from 1st August. Those made before are governed by the old terms.
So for the majority of ski holiday makers who want to bring skis away with them on a BA flight this winter, there will be an additional charge. This is effectively a ’ski carriage’ charge, as rarely will it be practical to take only one piece of baggage skiing
