BEST OF BRITISH LIGHT UP LES DEUX ALPES IN SPECTACULAR FINALE TO THE ORANGE BRITS (Posted Friday, March 26, 2004 by stu)

[Official Release]
The Orange British Snowboard & Freestyle Ski Championships, in association with O’Neill, Les Deux Alpes, France 20 – 27 March 2004.

26 March 2004. With blue skies and bright spring sunshine, the Orange Brits took on the last day of competition in Les Deux Alpes, France, rounding off a fantastic week of spectacular performances from the UK’s best riders. DJ Miss Ronnie busted out the tunes to the 1000 strong crowd that had gathered for the Snowboard Big Air Championships and the Orange Expression Session in the Halfpipe.

SNOWBOARD
With excellent conditions after yesterday’s snowfall and today’s sunshine, Britain’s top women boarders faced the Big Air jump. The organizers of the Orange Brits took the decision last night to announce the men’s champion based on scores from yesterday’s qualifier runs, in anticipation for bad weather today. Again it was the GB team members Tyler Chorlton and Dom Harington that stole the show. They had to fight strong opposition from last year’s Slopestyle Champion Scott McMorris. Chorlton, Olympic hopeful for Turin 2006, easily grabbed the Champion’s title with an amazing frontside corked 720 rotation. Harington, current Halfpipe Champion came second and McMorris third.

The women’s competition earlier this morning showcased the growing talent within the UK’s female snowboard scene. Mollie Boys, who has progressed the most throughout the Orange AIM Series 2003/04, glowed with pure confidence, executing a perfect backside 360 over a 17 meter jump. All rounder Zoe Gillings took second place, closely followed by Gilly Seagrave.

Results – Top three:
Mens Womens
1) Tyler Chorlton, Brighton / Andorra 1) Mollie Boys, Bradford
2) Dom Harington, Leeds 2) Zoe Gillings, Isle of Man
3) Scott McMorris, Edinburgh 3) Gilly Seagrave, Cambridge

The grand finale to the week was this afternoon’s fast paced and spectacular Orange Expression Session where top freestyle skiers and snowboarders from the week’s competition together with invited international riders went head to head to pull off the best single trick. The watching crowd chose the overall winner, sending in almost 1000 texts through the first ever Orange voting system. MC Christian Stevenson kept the crowd buzzing, calling out the leader-board as it happened. Spurred on by a prize pot of £1700 and the new Orange Nokia 6600 video phone, the riders and skiers pushed themselves to the limit, performing up to 8 foot high airs and multiple rotations.

The 2004 Orange Brits is coming to a close, with competitors and holiday makers alike in agreement that the week has been one of a kind, despite the poor weather conditions earlier in the week. Not only has everyone been treated to the best snowboard and freestyle ski action in the finest resort for professional competition of this standard, the entertainment has been first class. With the likes of Radio 1’s Sunday Best DJ, Rob Da Bank, DJ Tomo, class performance act The Cuban Brothers, DJ’s Beeny, Jadelle, collective Dub Pistols and UK’s No. 1 Hip Hop duo Rodney P & Skitz, this has undoubtedly pushed the limits of the Orange Brits as the action sports and lifestyle event at the forefront within Europe.

FREESTYLE SKIER WINS HALFPIPE CHAMPION’S TITLE WITH (Posted Thursday, March 25, 2004 by stu)

[Official Release]
The Orange British Snowboard & Freestyle Ski Championships, in association with O’Neill, Les Deux Alpes, France 20 – 27 March 2004.

25 March 2004. Day four at Europe’s biggest national freestyle snowsports championships started with clearer skies than previous days, providing good conditions for the Snowboard Big Air qualifiers and Freestyle Ski Halfpipe Championships. Unfortunately the clouds moved in with poor visibility and snowfall for the afternoon, postponing the Snowboard Big Air finals until tomorrow, Friday 26th March 2004.

FREESTYLE SKIING
UK’s finest freestyle skiers once again showed immense talent in completing the Halfpipe finals in such poor conditions, putting on remarkable performances. In the women’s competition the battle was between favorites Abi Pickett and Emma Lonsdale, as well as wildcard Phillipa Cammell. Ultimately, Lonsdale took the champion’s title with multiple variations of spins and grabs, including a 5 foot high clean 360 rotation. Cammell came in second and Pickett third.

In the men’s competition, the adrenalin soared when Mike Wakefield performed the best run ever in a Halfpipe by a UK skier. With back to back rotations such as a corked 900 and his trademark McTwist, never previously performed by British skier, he grabbed the champion’s title. The judges all agreed that Wakefield is destined to be an X-Games champion hopeful in the next few years. Andy Bennett, one of Europe’s top 5 skiers landed second, whilst Milo De Glanville took third position. The standard was higher than any European competition to date.

Results – Top three:
Mens Womens
1) Mike Wakefield, Wakefield 1) Emma Lonsdale, Kendall
2) Andy Bennett, Nottingham 2) Phillipa Cammell, Sussex
3) Milo de Glanville, London 3) Abi Pickett, Chamonix

SKI AMATEUR TAKES FIRST EVER BRITISH FREESTYLE SKI BIG AIR CHAMPION’S TITLE (Posted Wednesday, March 24, 2004 by stu)

[Official Release]
The Orange British Snowboard & Freestyle Ski Championships, in association with O’Neill, Les Deux Alpes, France 20 – 27 March 2004.

24 March 2004. Day three at the Orange British Snowboard and Freestyle Ski Championships saw heavy snowfall with poor visibility. However, organizers and judges took the decision to go ahead with competition. Despite the bad weather, UK’s top snowboarders and skiers displayed a very high standard of talent, providing the 200 strong audience with some spectacular action.

SNOWBOARDING In the men’s Halfpipe Finals, 16 riders had gone through from the previous day’s qualifiers. They were judged on amplitude, rotation, style and overall impression for the best two runs of the day. Favorites James Foster, defending champion, and GB team members Dom Harington and Tyler Chorlton were all on top form and used the pipe to maximum effect. Ultimately, Harington was the strongest rider with back to back high rotations, picking up top points in all judge categories, finishing his run with a frontside 720. Chortlon came second and Foster third.

The UK’s top 6 women took on the pipe in today’s Finals. Lesley McKenna, currently ranked 3rd on the World Cup Halfpipe circuit, was the natural favorite and didn’t disappoint with 7 foot high airs and solid frontside 540s. The run for second and third places was a slightly tighter race, with Melanie Leando and Zoe Gillings fighting it out. Leando had the edge, finishing second and Gillings third.

Results – Top three:
Mens Womens
1) Dom Harington, Leeds 1) Lesley McKenna, Aviemore
2) Tyler Chorlton, Brighton / Andorra 2) Melanie Leando, Jersey
3) James Foster, Suffolk / Canada 3) Zoe Gillings, Isle of Man

FREESTYLE SKIING In the afternoon’s Freestyle Ski Big Air competition, the weather closed in around Les Deux Alpes’ famous snowpark, yet again, this didn’t stop the UK’s finest. The judges all agreed that in the nation’s first Freestyle Ski Championships, the standard was amazingly high and that it was the closest ever men’s top 4 in UK competition history. Richard Taylor, who has only skied for six months, landed the best jump ever by a UK skier - a clean 900 rotation to take the champion’s title. Jamie Cameron and Andy Bennett were close behind, finishing second and third respectively.

The women’s competition proved just as spectacular with Abi Pickett pulling off a clean 360. This earned her the No. 1 spot, whilst fellow competitors Emma Lonsdale and Faith Dyer placed in the top three at a very respectable second and third correspondingly. All in all, the first Freestyle Ski Championships rocked, setting a high standard for future championship events.

Results – Top three:
Mens Womens
1) Richard Taylor, Wales 1) Abi Pickett, Chamonix
2) Jamie Cameron, Cornwall 2) Emma Lonsdale, Kendall
3) Andy Bennett, Nottingham 3) Faith Dyer, London

Orange Slopestyle Champs - Thursday’s report. (Posted Thursday, January 22, 2004 by stu)

( Main Picture: Paddy Graham. Bottom right: Mike Wakefield & Abbey Pickett the new British Slopestyle Champions) The Orange British Slopestyle Championships were again blessed with bluebird skies and scintillating commentary as the final of the skiing Slopestyle event wrapped up the week in fine style today. Despite worries that the fine skies would disappear, as had been predicted, skiers hustled up the hill first thing to get to grips with the rails and kickers in preparation for a tightly fought contest.

The cognoscenti had been predicting all week that the skiers would take the course to pieces, and they were proved right soon enough. Imaginative and progressive skiing was the order of the day, with the hip and rails getting a lot of attention. Pre-event favourite Mike Wakefield was leading the charge, with a corked 720 tip grab over the kicker and some sick trickery on the kinked rail that showcased his natural style. Tignes local Jamie Cameron also rode hard all day, owning the hip with some massive 360s. And let’s not forget 11-year-old Murray Buchan, who charged as hard as those twice his age. In the girl’s event, the standard was just as high, with Abbey Pickett skiing strongly early on.

With so many potential standouts, the judges’ task was a difficult one, particularly as high winds meant some of the course had to be closed for safety reasons. This didn’t deter Andy Bennett, who threw down switch alley-oops over the hip – about as technical as skiing gets.

In the end, the judges opted to reward Taylor in third and Bennett in second. Mike Wakefield’s final run of D Spin 720 mute followed by frontside grinds on each of the rails was enough to clinch him the win. Pickett took the girls win ahead of Sarah Musson and Roisin McNeill.

Skier Pat Sharples summed things up best when he said, ‘All of us riders had a brilliant day. It was great to see Murray Buchan (aged 11) hitting big jumps and seeing skiers like Andy Bennett on such great form. Sure, the weather could have been better but the jumps we got to ride were super good fun, so it was a great day all in all’.

Orange Slopestyle Champs - Wednesday’s report. (Posted Wednesday, January 21, 2004 by stu)

(Main Picture: Hamish Duncan. Bottom left to right: Ben Kilner on the Hip, Si Brass on the C Rail, and the other 2 are Tyler & Laura the new British Slopestyle Champions) Bombs were dropped before the riders had even made it up the hill on the final snowboarding day of the Orange British Slopestyle Championships. As pisteurs continued to make the mountain safe by blasting potential danger spots, competitors and the assembled media awoke to brilliant sunshine. There was an expectant atmosphere as the crew quickly headed up the hill to find the course looking pristine. Practise soon kicked off as the riders got to grips with the rails and the hips.

Standout riders quickly became apparent – as did the fact that the standard of UK snowboarding is heading for the stratosphere. Hamish McKnight, Hamish Duncan, Laura Berry, James Carr and Scott McMorris displayed their mastery of the rails, while Nelson Pratt astonished onlookers with some enormously high airs over the hip. Unfortunately, as the session heated up, so did the devilishly high winds which meant that the focus for the Slopestyle final shifted from the kickers to the rails.

Practise over, final qualifying started at midday, with each rider taking two runs at the rails and hip. Judges Kiwi Meier, James Stentiford, Justin Westcott and Steve Shea were looking for a combination of individuality, style and consistency. The girls kicked it off, with the aforementioned Berry taking it on strong, closely followed by Olivia Armitage and Vicci Millar. Among the lads, Scott McMorris, Hamish Duncan, Tyler Chorlton and young superstar James Carr marked themselves out as the ones to watch. MC Tim Warwood again stole the show with some inspired commentary that set things off nicely and gave the session the same wicked atmosphere as yesterday.

In the event, Tyler Chorlton took trick of the day with a sick frontside 270 on to 270 out on the kinked rail. It was enough to win the affable 17 year old the title too. He was followed by Scott McMorris and Dom Harington. In the Ladies event, Laura ‘Bez’ Berry took the plaudits ahead of Vicci Millar and Gilly Seagrave. Now the crew awaits a night of revelry and debauchery in celebration, and the skiers event tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Orange Slopestyle Champs - Tuesday’s report. (Posted Tuesday, January 20, 2004 by stu)

(Main Picture: Hamish Duncan. Smaller shots of James Carr, Tim Warwood and Hamish) Bad weather greeted the snowboarders and skiers today in Les Deux Alpes for the Orange British Slopestyle Championships. High winds, snow and cloud dogged the event until the organisers called off the proposed qualifiers and made the day a practice session.

Not that the decision dampened the atmosphere of the comp. Commentator Tim Warwood pulled out all the stops and coaxed all the snowboarders into a session on the C shaped rail at the bottom of the course, getting cash off spectators and filmers in such a comedy manner that hundreds of people stayed to laugh and watch as the riders rode for fun and an eventual impromtu pot of 100 Euros for the rail rider of the day.

Eventual winners were Scott McMorris who won the hastily invented ‘20 Euro Challenge’ by switch frontside boardsliding the C rail, while all the riders voted a split between Hamish Duncan and 14 year old James Carr for the ‘Rider of the Day award’ which took the rest of the donated cash. “It was really funny”, said spectator Hannah Chandler from London. “the fact that skiers stopped to donate money was legendary”.

Talking of which, the 40 skiers already signed up for the Slopestyle will get to ride tomorrow after the proposed snowboard final in preparation for their day on Thursday. With £10,000 up for grabs it promises to be a more serious session. Check in each day for the results of that comp, as well as tomorrow’s planned snowboard final.

Orange Slopestyle Champs - Monday’s report. (Posted Monday, January 19, 2004 by stu)

(Left Dan Wakeham sessioning the Halfpipe) The Orange British Slopestyle opened today in blistering sunshine and a perfect metre of fresh powder in Les Deux Alpes, France. Competitors, spectators and holiday makers were understandably stoked, with the Slopestyle course looking primed for Tuesday’s snowboard event.

Girls favourite Lesley McKenna hasn’t turned up, leaving the 9 girls entered with an open invite to take the top spot. In the men’s event. the bookies favourite Danny Wheeler is in town, but with talent like Simon Brass, Dom Harington, Tyler Chorlton, Scott McMorris and 41 other hopefuls around, his domination of the course is anything but certain.

And what a course it is - three 15 meter kickers lead the riders into a step down rail, a choice of hips, a kinked rail and a hip line which finishes in a C rail. Riders are expected to find their own lines, with innovation and style being the key words in the judges tent.

Of which head judge Danni Mayer reckons will be a hive of activity come Tuesday afternoon. Points are awarded for an overall score, meaning riders are judged on their entire two minutes on the course, with no obstacle or trick giving any more points than any other. “We’re looking for originality, style and consistency”, said Danni. “In the end, the best UK rider will win”.

Check back in tomorrow for a full list of results on the £10,000 purse prize, and of course, for the list of the two winners of the TTRQ event.

Orange Slopestyle Champs - Sunday’s report. (Posted Sunday, January 18, 2004 by stu)

Opener: High winds big front great course.

Friday 16th January: High winds and big storm fronts are currently battering Les Deux Alpes, France, laying down some serious snow for Monday’s proposed Slopestyle kick off. Organiser Spencer Claridge said “The weather should clear for Monday. Tuesday looks like being a classic blue powder day”.

Not that powder will distract the UK’s best freestyle skiers and snowboarders from the proposed task: to take on the man-made Slopestyle course of Halfpipe, Funboxes, Hips and Rails for a cash prize and a chance to ride in the coveted Ticket To Ride event of the Quiksilver Slopestyle Pro. In the snowboard event the women’s favourite Lesley McKenna has jetted in from Canada where she recently topped the World Cup rankings, whilst in the men’s division all eyes are on a battle between Yorkshire’s Danny Wheeler and Scotland’s Scott McMorris.

In the skiing event, most insiders think the big story will be between the northern might of Andy Bennett from Sheffield and Wakefield’s namesake Mike Wakefield.

Catch updates on the OrangeWorld snowsports page as we get live feeds from the resort as the action unfolds. If they don’t go skiing and snowboarding off into the powder that is!

Orange Indoor Big Air Championships; Ski & Snowboard Results (Posted Saturday, October 18, 2003 by jennyahnell)

Orange Snowboard & Freestyle Ski Indoor Big Air Championships
Xscape, Castleford 18th October 2003

As the Orange AIM Series 2003 moved into the all new Xscape snozone in Castleford, for some real snow action, UK’s top snowboarders and Freestyle skiers took to the slope for the Orange Indoor Big Air Championships.

60 Freestyle skiers got fresh tracks in the mornings ski championship, hitting the 10 metre purpose built jump at up to 30 mph, the skiers impressed the 3,800 spectators with an array of extreme stunts, launching them 3-4 meters into air. In the women’s field it was Teri Spencer, Halifax, who put in a show of girl power, with her continuous high airs and smooth tricks. Teri was announced champion after landing a perfect Big-360-Ironcross, which is amazing for a girl who only started skiing this year.

In the men’s competition it was a tight battle between the UK’s top three skiers, Yorkshire locals Mike Wakefield, Wakefield, Paddy Graham, Sheffield and Andy Bennett, Nottingham. In the end it was Mike Wakefield who took the Champion’s title after landing a super clean D-Spin-7 before Andy Bennett second and Paddy Graham third.

Board action took over the afternoon with 100 snowboard competitors from all over the UK hitting the jump. It was the high profile pro’s, used to bigger jump sizes that shone through. Nicola Cogan from Glasgow performed a Big-Melon off the main kicker, which awarded her the champion’s title and proved how far women’s snowboarding has come in the last couple of years.

The men’s final got the adrenalin flowing with Big-Frontside-540’s being the trick of the day. Taking it a step further was one of the favourites James Thorne from Norwich who stomped a solid champions run with a Cab-Cork-540-Tailgrab.

All winners at today’s National competition have now qualified into the Big Air Final at the Orange British Snowboard and Freestyle Ski Championships out in Les Deux Alpes, France in March 2004.

AIM Series announce new title sponsor (Posted Saturday, October 18, 2003 by jennyahnell)

ORANGE UK TAKES TO THE SLOPES
ANNOUNCING SPONSORSHIP OF THE AIM SNOWBOARD
& FREESTYLE SKI SERIES

18 October 2003: Orange, the UK’s most popular mobile phone service, today unveils a major sponsorship agreement with Soul Sports Events - the creators of the AIM Snowboard and Freestyle Ski Series.

Orange made the announcement at the Orange Big Air Championships held today at the new XSCAPE snowdome in Castleford - where the cream of British snowboarders and freestyle skiers competed at the newest, most advanced UK indoor snow sports complex. Featuring a 150m recreational slope covered with 1,500 tonnes of real snow and home to the ‘house sized’ Big Air jump - XSCAPE is the ideal venue for this prestigious launch event.

Under the three year deal, Orange is to become communications partner and title sponsor to the entire AIM Series, which will now be known as the Orange AIM Series.

The Orange AIM Snowboard & Freestyle Ski Series is a national circuit programme, that represents the highest level of competition in the UK and incorporates all three snow surfaces in the sport; artificial, indoor and mountain.

The calendar of events includes a university tour, six UK based artificial and indoor qualifying events as well as two prestigious mountain events in Les Deux Alpes; the Orange Slopestyle Championships in January and the Orange British Snowboard and Freestyle Ski Championships in March.

The sponsorship reflects Orange UK’s increased activity in the youth market place and will focus on enabling the tech-savvy, highly mobile snowboard and ski audience to engage with the sport and its community through the development of bespoke content and services. In line with its broader sponsorship strategy, Orange UK’s commitment to the AIM series will extend its reach from the pinnacle of the sport through to a commitment at grass roots level.

Announcing the deal, John Allwood, Executive Vice-President of Orange UK said: “Orange is very pleased to announce this association with such a dynamic and aspirational sport. We chose the AIM Series because it represents the highest level circuit for competitive snowboarding and freestyle skiing in the UK with the endorsement of a recognised international professional structure.”

Stuart Brass and Spencer Claridge of Soul Sports Events, the organisers of the AIM Series, said: "We are very happy to have Orange onboard as title sponsor of the AIM Series and the British Snowboard and Freestyle Ski Championships. With their strong involvement in the youth lifestyle market they share our goal to get young people more active through alternative sports and interests and in this case raise awareness of these two thrilling sports."

Orange will launch a WAP-based information service, providing regular updates on extreme sports events including AIM Series heats and results, an Orange AIM Series Beginners Guide to Snowboarding, downloadable Java games (including Snowboarding Fever, Freestyle X and Sno-Pro), snow and weather reports and a range of ringtones and logos.

Users can also register for hints and tips from the Orange AIM Series experts. By texting SNOW to ‘82888’ customers can keep updated with free editorial content including latest news, competitor profiles and event schedules. Orange will also be working with third parties to provide new and exclusive content to keep extreme sports lovers in the know.

I am trying to collect as much DV footage from the summer's AIM events as I can get my little Swedish hands on.
I need to supply a certian production company with footage for an AIM feature and was wondering if anyone has any DV footage that we could have access to and get permission to submit for this feature.

AIM Halifax review, 27 Sept (Posted Tuesday, September 30, 2003 by stu)

[Official Press Release]
The National Artificial Big Air Championships 2003

The last event of the AIM Series artificial leg 2003 was without a doubt the best. With over 80 competitors, 300 spectators and 75 beginners having a free snowboard or ski lesson, the atmosphere at the national Artificial Snowboard and Freestyle Ski Championships, held at Halifax Ski Centre, was buzzing along with the sunshine.

The morning started with the Freestyle Ski Championships and a great turn up of local as well as regional talent taking on UK’s biggest dryslope Big Air jump. Though the standard of skiing among the men was high it was the girls that amazed the crowd. With almost the double amount of female entrants compared to previous dryslope events the girls had to push themselves that little extra, putting on a surprise display of rotation and big air tricks not too far of the men’s performances.

The Halifax freestyle ski scene definitely made its mark nationally after both the men’s and women’s champion titles went to local athletes Jan Buczynski and Teri Spencer. Jan Buczynski won the title on his runs of solid 540’s and 720’s, while Teri Spencer showed off great talent with her big 360’s and grabs.

The Snowboard Big Air Championships in association with O'Neill continued the day with more local talent wooing the crowd. In the men’s run the high level of technical tricks and smooth riding gave the judges a very hard job. With almost identical scores after the two qualifying runs 16 riders were brought through to the final for one last run to battle for the title. In the end it was Stuart Edwards from Sheffield who kept his cool and performed a super clean run of a big back-side cork 720 mute to earn the title.

In the women’s competition it was soon clear that women’s snowboarding in the UK has come a far way over the last year, with the women performing very similar tricks to the men with more rotation and higher airs than ever before. Mollie Boys from Bradford took the title with a perfect run of a big back-side 360 tailgrab.

A new for the AIM Series was the afternoons Team Challenge. Not part of the Championship competition, this expression session invited teams of three to choose their line down the slope including Big Air kicker, moguls and rails. Twelve teams mixing snowboarders/ skiers and age groups took up the challenge and got the crowd in a frenzy with a flow of tricks such as big 720’s, 540’s, solid grabs and smooth rail slides.
In the end the Vapor Team with Richard Barrow, Colum Mytton and Wayne Taylor walked away winners closely followed by Team Yo! of Laura Berry, Rob Yeomans and Luke Paull.

Next event in the AIM Series calendar is the Indoor Big Air Championships at the brand new Xscape, Castleford on the 18th October 2003.

The AIM Series is sanctioned by the BSA and SnowsportsGB.

Halifax Big Air Championships (Posted Wednesday, September 24, 2003 by jennyahnell)

CHANGE OF PROGRAMME

Snowboard and Freestyle Ski Big Air Championships to run back to back on Saturday 27th September 2003

After some contemplating in the Soul Sports Events office, it has been decided that the Artificial Big Air Championships at Halifax Ski Centre will be run over one day, Saturday 27th September. The snowboard and freestyle ski competitions will run back to back, following the concept of the indoor events, offering a prize pot of £1000 as well as 2004 equipment and gear from our sponsors.

The decision was made after the realisation that the Halifax AIM event is conflicting with a competition at Birmingham ski show and the soft-opening of Xscape in Castleford. With changing the programme Soul Sports Events are giving the athletes the opportunity to partake in all events.

There will also be more of an atmosphere surrounding the event with everyone hanging out together; riders, skiers and spectators.

New programme for 27th September;
COMPETITION SCHEDULE SKI

9 – 10 am Ski Registration
10 – 11 am Ski Big Air Practise
11 – 12 pm Ski Big Air Start (NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS)
12.15 pm Ski Prize Giving

COMPETIITON SCHEDULE SNOWBOARD
12 – 1 pm Snowboard Registration
1 – 2 pm Snowboard Big Air Practice
2 – 4 pm Big Air Start (NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS)
4 - 5 pm Team Challenge
6 pm Snowboard/ Team Challenge Prize Giving

Equipment demos from Salomon, Ride and K2 throughout the day.

The Grande Finale of the day will be a Team Challenge straight after the Snowboard finals. The Challenge is open to teams of three. Any rad mixture will be allowed; just riders, just skiers or MIXED teams. The best mixture of tricks, style, flow and technicality will be crowned the AIM Series team 2003.

For the curious members of the public who yet have to be smitten by the thrills of snowboarding and skiing, there will be FREE introductory lessons available from 10 am to 4 pm, courtesy of O’Neill and Trespass. There are still some spaces available, so this is the chance to get your girl-, boyfriend, mate or even grandma to get a taste of your passion! Registration is done on aimseries.com.

To keep us entertained through the day MC extraordinaire Tim Warwood will spread the word, while DJs Tony and Dom Harrington will set the vibe with some stinking good music. The more laidback can chill in the Helly Hansen Movie Lounge with cool snowboard and ski films.

High Wycombe Review

AIM High Wycombe this weekend! (Posted Tuesday, July 1, 2003 by stu)

ba, ba, ba-ba; ba, ba, ba-ba; ba, ba, ba-ba, ba; ba-ba-baaa.

Just as groups of Druids, running around strange rock formations with their pants on their head's signals the start of the Glastonbury Festival, so the theme tune to Wimbledon denotes the start of this year's AIM Series.

Now come on, who really got that from a row of ba's? I wrote it and am still struggling to understand it.

High Wycombe, this weekend, 5th & 6th July, will be the first port of call for all budding freestyle skiers and snowboarders in the UK wanting to make a name for themselves at this year’s National qualification circuit – The AIM Series.

Equally important though are the 200 free lessons that are being offered to anybody who wishes to try either sport. Eager participants just need to go onto the website and enter their details to secure a lesson at any of the AIM events around the country, each participant gets a free goody bag with t-shirt. Everybody has to learn sometime, and it’s not everyday you get the chance to do it for absolutely free plus make a complete plum of yourself in front of hundreds of strangers. Jim’ll fix it for you!

Last year, the AIM Series became the breeding ground for emerging snowboard hopefuls and intends to replicate that for freestyle skiers this year.

A good number of the competitors are sponsored / professional riders, however, the emphasis is on encouraging more amateurs to compete and get their first taste of competitive skiing and snowboarding, regardless of age, sex, colour, foot size, star sign, Cristina or Britney preferences. Absolute Bo Selecta prizes will be up for grabs for all competitors in a bib draw. Plus any parent/child competitor combo’s will be suitably rewarded and if anybody can work Granny into the equation will throw in a Moulinex food processor.

Saturday will stage the snowboarding event and on Sunday the Skiers will get their chance to prove why they have forced their way into the Series. Detailed programme below.

Saturday Night will host the dedicated lodge-night with big name DJ, ScratchEwa-ewawickedywickwick, who will thump onto 1am.

It’s a wicked weekend where people can try the sports for themselves, compete, spectate, sun-bathe, watch the tennis in between, burn food on the BBQ, crack open a can and generally chill, all in the pleasant surroundings of Wycombe Summit’s woodland (I think I’ve just inadvertently targeted Bill Oddie and John Craven).

Folk wishing to make a weekend of it are welcome to bring their camping kit and pitch up onsite. There is no electrical hook-up or fresh water supply and emptying the shitter of your 30 foot, 10 berth Winnebago onsite will be frowned upon. Apart from that, anything goes, and we look forward to seeing you there.
