Award winning surf film: WAVE RIDERS at your local cinema (Posted Tuesday, April 28, 2009 by stu)

The long awaited Waveriders Movie, featuring Quiksilver Pro's Kelly Slater and Gabe Davies, reached top 5 at the Irish box office nationwide!

WAVERIDERS is the previously untold story of the unlikely Irish roots of the worldwide surfing phenomenon and today's pioneers of Irish big wave surfing.
The story unfolds through the inspirational and ultimately tragic history of Irish/Hawaiian legendary waterman, George Freeth, the son of an Irishman, who was responsible
for the rebirth of this sport of Hawaiian kings in the early twentieth century. With its distinguished cast of world-renowned Irish, British and Irish/American surfers WAVERIDERS
journeys full-circle from Hawaii to California and back to Irish shores following Freeth's wave of influence. The journey reaches a spectacular climax when the surfers
conquer the biggest swell ever to have been ridden in Ireland by catching monster waves of over fifty feet.
Stars Kelly Slater, Gabe Davies, Chris, Keith & Dan Malloy, Richard Fitzgerald.

CURTAIN CLOSES ON HAWAII PROJECT (Posted Thursday, November 27, 2008 by stu)

GROMS RETURN HOME AFTER MONTH ON NORTH SHORE

After a great month on the North Shore of Hawaii the 5 National Champion junior surfers returned back to their chilly home waters of England, Wales and Ireland.

The trip was a huge success with a constant supply of North West swells and some fantastic early season conditions with minimal crowds resulting in sky high stoke levels.

The initiative was the brainchild of Surf Solutions coach Joel Gray and yet again he was assisted by Martin Connolly from Discovery Surf School. Completing the team was top European lens man Roger Sharp (www.surfphoto.co.uk).

Tassy Swallow (St Ives) and Beth Mason (Wales) were the only 2 girls on the trip and they were joined by Josh Piper and George Picking (Newquay) and Aaron Reid (Ireland).

The 5 surfers underwent an intensive month of surfing, training, coaching and experiences and left the North Shore with a head full of memories alongside the development in their own surfing.

George Picking summarises. “Hawaii has got to be the best place I’ve ever been. It’s amazing. The island itself is really nice and the people are cool too but the waves are epic. Being there for a month was definitely a good idea because we got to catch lots of different swells, like big Sunset, to sick Off-the-Wall and then practice at Larni’s and Rockys too, which I loved. Watching the pros was definitely a bonus. To see how they surf for real and to be in the water with the top guys and competing for waves definitely brings you up a level I think. Hawaii definitely pushes you. I feel its definitely improved my surfing and its one of the best trips of my life. Loved it!”

The main focus of this and all other Surf Solutions Projects is technical coaching. This was achieved mainly through video analysis from land and board cams, various group and individual goal setting, drills and feedback. They also spent time working on psychological issues with clip boards full of questionnaires for analysis pre, during and post surf.

Aside from the specific coaching an overall aim is giving the young surfers a good, solid introduction to Hawaii. “Hawaii is the ultimate proving ground and it is the traditional end of year contest finale. What we are trying to do is get the groms as comfortable as possible both in the water and on land. To achieve this we have a fantastic beach side accommodation, great SUV car, and links with the best surfboard shapers in Tokoro and Bushman. We try to get them involved with the community and get in a routine. We did Yoga at the Turtle Bay resort, had bikes to ride along the bike path, physical training, tourist trips. We’d spend time with the XCEL guys and take in their contest and the Haleiwa start of the Triple Crown. The overall idea is to get them as comfortable as possible so that they can concentrate on the waves and the surfing and of course put them in a better position for the future. One day I hope some of these kids will be coming back and competing in the Triple Crown events on their own. This provides the perfect start for them.” Joel Gray

Each day the surfers get voted for a surfer of the day award and at the end of the trip these are tallied up and a ‘King of the Rock’ is crowned. This year the accolade went to Aaron Reid from Sligo, Ireland. (See photo) “The Hawaii Project was an amazing trip. I had a lot of fun and the waves are really good for training on, which I suppose is why it gets the name " the proving grounds". The other guys really pushed me to surf better and it was so good surfing with all the pros too. The coaching was top notch and some of the fitness work was extreme hard going but definitely worth it. I’m happy to go home and work on my techniques on my home turf. I really feel I benefited from the trip. It was sick.” (Aaron Reid)

Surf Solutions Hawaii Project will return again in 2009 and interested junior surfers are urged to get in touch. For more information on that and other Projects take a look at the website. www.surfsolutions.tv

SUMMER WITH THE BRITISH SURFING MUSEUM (Posted Monday, June 23, 2008 by stu)

An art history of British Surfing

Our latest exhibition 'an art history of British surfing' is at the Fishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby from June 28 to September 7, 2008.
Art and surfing have been inextricably linked for hundreds of years, and this show looks at how both these elements combined to glide into British consciousness over the past few centuries.
From early sketches of surfers during the voyages of Captain James Cook in the 18th century and iconic hand sculpted wooden surfboards, to the flower power of the 1960s and garish fluorescent colours of the 1980s – paintings, posters, photography and film – ‘an art history of British surfing’ is a visual feast.
Also on show will be stunning replicas of ancient Hawaiian surfboards hand carved by the Tom Pohaku Stone – a lecturer in Hawaiian culture and surfer of legendary status. For the first time, you'll be able to play our wonderful 1976 Surf Champ pinball machine, and help raise money for the British Surfing Museum at the same time!

Paddle round the Pier

We'll be at this wonderful charity weekend on Brighton beach on July 5 and 6, 2008.
We will have a 1960s surfing beach display featuring our 1966 VW splitscreen van alongside our friends and sponsors Oxbow - come and say hello! This promises to be a great weekend for all the family down on Brighton seafront near the West Pier. Plus there's the amazing spectacle of the Oxbow Endurance Stand Up Paddle race - a mere 10 miles from Worthing Pier to the West Pier... pray for calm conditions in the English Channel!

'Surfing's Golden Age: the 70s Kodachromes' by Jeff Divine

For the first time in the UK, Jeff Divine's iconic 1970s imagery will be on display at the Crane Kalman Gallery - 38 Kensington Gardens, North Laine, Brighton BN1 4AL - July 23 to August 31, 2008
We'll have some original 1970s surfboards on show alongside Divine's stunning photos. Here's the press blurb on the show; "at a time when surfing is more popular than ever, Jeff Divine's work pays a fitting tribute to its golden years - a nostalgic and fascinating testimony to the style, the boards, the locations, the attitudes; and not just to the sport but to the way of life. The Seventies birthed a new generation of surfers, with a new language, new attitude and, with the advent of the shortboard, a new way of surfing. Divine captured the time in a comprehensive, on-the-spot fashion. Divine's colour saturated photography is drenched with purity and soul, and with a hint of 70s psychedelic spin. His vision was vibrantly tuned to the times and captured the free-spirited nature embodied by a sport in its adolescence."

BRITISH SURFING JUNIORS REV UP FOR 2007 CHAMPIONSHIPS (Posted Monday, September 3, 2007 by stu)

Young British surfers across the country are putting in hours of training in preparation for the 2007 Billabong British Junior Championships. The teams at the British Surfing Association (BSA) and sponsors Billabong, Calypso and North Cornwall District Council are also planning the final arrangements and preparing themselves for what is expected to be the biggest ever entry. The championships, widely recognised as one of the key events on the British surf calendar and selection event for the World Junior Surfing Games 2008, will take place on 15th and 16th September at Widemouth Bay in Bude in North Cornwall.

Last year saw Tom Butler from Newquay and local Bude boy Reubyn Ash battle it out but it was Tom that showed stunning form in heavy waves to be crowned junior champion. This year, Tom will be back to regain his title but Reubyn is now too old for the Junior category so the competition is on!

2006 saw the largest ever entry with over 160 surfers traveling from all over the country to compete for this major title and, with the continual growth of British competitive surfing, the BSA is expecting an even bigger entry this year. The event includes 6 divisions including Under 12s, Under 14s, Under 16, Under 18, Under 14 girls and Under 18 girls. Over £1,500 is up for grabs as well as lots of Billabong and Kustom Goodies.

Karen Walton, National Director, BSA said, “Year-on-year, The Billabong British Juniors is a great event and last year’s phenomenal entry and gripping final illustrated just how strong the enthusiasm is at this level. Surfers, their families and sponsors travel from all over the country and Bude makes an ideal setting for this important competition. The results will have a heavy bearing on the selection process for the World Junior Surfing Games next year meaning that all of the winners are likely to score themselves a double victory and have the chance to represent their country at the highest level.”

Sam Carrier, Surf Marketing Coordinator at Billabong Europe, commented, “Supporting junior surfing is what our brand is all about and the British Junior Championships is the perfect place to see our most talented and determined young surfers giving their all for this important title. We’re looking forward to a great weekend of surfing and wish all the competitors the best of luck.”

Anyone wishing to enter should contact the BSA on 01637 876474.

UK leg of the Moskito Surf Tour goes off! (Posted Monday, June 4, 2007 by stu)

The UK leg of the Moskito Tour went off this past weekend in great 4 to 5 foot conditions at Fistral Beach!

With just under a 100 groms entering the 2 day event and great conditions throughout the weekend the UK leg of the European Moskito Tour has proved to be the best yet in 2007!

Surfer: Toby Donachie
The event kicked off early on Saturday morning with a consistent 2-3 foot swell and light offshore winds giving competitors a great opportunity to show off their skills. With the rain holding off, and the promise of sunny skies ahead, the crowds at the beach were about to witness the UK’s best up and coming surfers in action.

The early rounds of the Under 12’s and Girls divisions got underway, with heats running back to back maximizing the great conditions on offer. From early on, 11 year old Harry Timson proved to be a surfer to watch out for, ripping through his early heats in the under 12’s division with some fantastic surfing.

Zoe Sheath (15) and Holly Donelly (15) cruised through the early girls rounds getting themselves into the final against other stand outs Kathlean Spears and Tassy Swallows.
It was Holly however who took the honors winning the girls division with some impressive surfing to seal the victory! Holly also posted the highest score of the event with a 9.17.
In the Under 12’s, Harry Timson convincingly took the win, with a high standard of surfing beyond his years, even managing to combo the other 3 finalists with a combined 2 wave score of 17.33! After the prize giving Harry said, “I’m really excited, I surfed well today and I can’t wait to get in the Under 14’s tomorrow, I’m gonna try and win that too!” Harry walked away laden with prizes from the event sponsors.

Competitors were greeted with an increase in swell size on Sunday morning. With a solid 4 to 5 foot shorebreak pounding the high tide mark at Fistral event directors were pleased to have completed the under 12’s division the previous day. “The shorey was pretty heavy,” Phil Richardson said, “some of the younger kids were amped for it but you can’t expect everyone to get out there, especially if they don’t know the break at Fistral as well as others.”

The first round of Under 16’s got underway from 9am with all 8 heats running back to back, followed by the quarter finals of the Under 14’s division. As the tide dropped the swell started to pick up on the good banks at Fistral, providing perfect 4 to 5 foot competition waves.

Again, youngster Harry Timson was proving to be a formidable contender, cruising through his heats in the under 14’s and working his way into the semis with some impressive surfing in the larger conditions. Leon Mansfield (14) also showed off some great moves, putting in powerful turns and high performance maneuvers throughout his heats, working his way into the Under 14’s final.

In the Under 16’s heats Jack Butler (16) and Toby Donachie from Constantine showed off some fantastic surfing, with Toby posting the highest Under 16 combined score of 16.90. Jack was unfortunate not to make the final but Toby powered through to meet the other 3 finalists – Josh Hughes, Stuart Campbell and Josh Piper.

The final of the Under 14’s kicked off in excellent mid-tide Fistral surf. From the outset Leon Mansfield posted high scores and looked set to win the heat hands down! His high standard of surfing and wave selection was phenomenal and he was rewarded by the judges high scores, combo’ing his fellow competitors with a 16.00. When the hooter sounded for the end of the heat it was obvious who had won.

The final of the Under 16’s was the most competitive heat of the event with all 4 surfers working hard to claim the win. With some great surfing Toby almost had the final in the bag and was getting ready to claim the win but in the dying moments of the heat Stuart Campbell rode an excellent wave from way outside, whacking it all the way through to the inside, and scored well for it, getting the score he needed to steal victory away from Toby.

The awards ceremony signaled the end of the 2 day event, with all finalists being awarded a mass of prizes from the event sponsors, including the latest sunglasses from Electric, clothing from Santa Cruz and Board bags and other goods from Globe.
During the prize giving the lucky winner of the highly sort after limited edition Santa Cruz G-Deck surfboard was awarded via a raffle draw.

With kids of all ages entering the event, the youngest competitor being 8 year old Angus Scotney from St Mawgan, the UK leg of the Moskito Tour was deemed a huge success!

Phil Richardson, Marketing Manager for Electric Europe, said “I’m really stoked with how the event went off, we couldn’t have asked for better conditions, the standard of kids surfing in the UK is as good as anywhere in Europe! I was really impressed with the way the kids attacked the surf and also with the UK surf scene”.

Brad Hockridge, Santa Cruz Europe, said “The event was a great success, we were blessed with great waves for competitors to show off their potential. We flew Matt ‘Ratt’ in from the States and we were stoked to see him throwing some big maneuvers in the UK surf and for him to be on hand to explain the Santa Cruz Epoxy board revolution.”

The Moskito Tour now heads to Santander in Spain to get the best out of the Spanish groms!

SS Team winners at BPSA Opener
Photos- O’neills Alex Baker top turn training
TEAM –Joel Gray, Tassy Swallow, Kethleen Spears, Beth Mason, Gwen Spurlock, Lyndon Wake, Toby Donachie, Zak Lawton, Alex Baker.

The Surf Solutions Team have left the beaches of Hossegor after 2 weeks of full training and coaching in some quality spring conditions. Head coach Joel Gray explains what the surfers went through. “Each day we’d have 2 or 3 surfs, working on both generic and individual performance markers. Heat drills, manoeuvre focus and lots of video analysis. The main aim is to improve the technique of the junior surfers and tidy up contest and pressure performance skills.” Aside from the surfing the boys and girls were also put through their paces by strength coach Michael Pellegrino. Michael is at the top of his field in the UK and introduced many interesting state of the art workouts involving both the ‘flexi-bar’ the stability ball, and a car!. “First of all I spent some time testing the young athletes for any imbalances and then set about putting together an individual programme for each. The flexi-bar works through sharpening the nervous system to react appropriately and the work with the balls was designed to help with balance, core conditioning and functional strength.” explains Michael. The team were also spotted pulling and pushing an old Peugot 205 around the La Sud Car Park with Michael barking instructions from the drivers seat. Check out Slide magazine for a feature on the trip.(slidemag.com)

All of the coaching and training must have paid off as the young SS Team flew straight back into the BPSA Saltrock Open in Croyde Bay and immediately put their mark down. Gwen Spurlock won the under 16 girls with young Tassy Swallow coming in 4th while O’Neill’s Alex Baker smoked the heavy Boys under 16 field. Nike 6.0’s Lyndon Wake also turned heads with some solid surfing making a few tough heats in the Pro Junior event and Gwen made it to 3rd in the Open. All eyes are now centred on next weekends British Schools where the SS Team will be hoping for more success. Joel and the SS coaching team are flying back to support the team, the De La Salle school from Jersey and check on future prospects.

Keep your eyes peeled for future Surf Solutions training such as the Future Pro Project, French Summer Camp, annual Hawaii Training Project “The Rock” and a Canaries Crash course.

BRIT SURF JUNIORS CLIMB HIGH TO REACH TOP OF THE WORLD! (Posted Wednesday, January 17, 2007 by stu)

The British junior surf squad will reach new heights this weekend in their preparation for the World Junior Surfing Games, as they face the climbing wall at Newquay Sports Centre.

It’s all part of the rigorous programme put together by GB coaching and management team, to prepare the team for the world championships, to be held next May in Portugal.

‘The climbing wall is a test of their mental strength as well as their physical strength, and will also contribute to team bonding,’ says the head coach Tyson Greenway. ‘They’re all very competitive, and the urge to outdo each other is great for motivation and morale among the team.’

The session has been put together by the BSA in partnership with the EBO Adventure Centre

Hoping to build on the unprecedented individual and team successes of British surfers on the world stage last year, the junior squad is benefiting from advanced fitness, physiological and psychological pre-contest preparation during monthly training camps. In February the squad is due to travel to Taghazout, Morocco, for a week’s technical coaching in warmer and more consistent conditions than they are likely to find at Fistral this weekend.

Meanwhile, with their sights fixed firmly on the summit of the World Games in Portugal, the junior squad, selected from throughout Britain, will converge on Newquay on Friday, to face the challenge of the Newquay Sports Centre’ climbing wall, before a weekend of surfing and classroom sessions with the BSA’s elite coaching team.

A victorious Sam Lamiroy consolidated one of the best years of his career this weekend when he was crowned British Surfing Champion for the second time at the O’Neill British Surf Championships in Devon. 2006 has been an epic year for the surfer who grew up in the North East having made it to the quarter finals of the World Surfing Games, being placed 16th in the world, having surfed some of the biggest waves ever conquered in the UK and even finding the time to get married.

Following three frustrating postponements due to poor conditions, the British Surfing Association (BSA) decided to move the event to Putsborough in Devon this weekend to ensure ideal waves and surfers traveled to compete in the veteran, masters, seniors and open categories. Clean 4-5ft conditions provided the backdrop for some fine British surfing action that saw Sam up against Newquay boys Mark ‘Egor’ Harris, Llewellyn Whittaker and Ritchie Mullins in the final of the open. Surfing strong all the way through the heats, Egor looked like a likely contender for the title but he couldn’t beat Sam’s form and in the end took second place with Ritchie and Llewellyn taking third and fourth respectively.

And 16 year old Beth Mason of Swansea also consolidated her position at the top of the UK’s women’s scene taking the British title. This marked yet another high point in a year that has seen her surfing as the youngest competitor in the Freespirit British Surf team for the World Surfing Games in California as well as completing her GCSEs.
Jo Dennison of Milford Haven, Gwen Spurlock of Swansea and Kathleen Spears of Croyde took second, third and fourth places.

Also showing phenomenal form, Grishka Roberts, who has entered five competitions this year and won four, rode to victory in the Masters section with Jamie Owen, Neil Clifton and Jed Stone taking second, third and fourth places on the podium. Both Grishka and Jed will be traveling to Puerto Rico in January to represent Britain at the World Masters Championships

In the seniors, Gabe Davies of Newcastle scored the top wave of the day with a 9.17 on a wave in his final against Paul Kirby of Bude, Gold Rush champion Scott Eastwood of Jersey, Neil Clifton of Woolacombe and Daz Wright of Newquay who came second, third, fourth and fifth. And in the Veterans, Gary Rogers of Saltburn took second place with Jed Stone of Newquay taking the championship title.

Karen Walton, National Director of the BSA said, “We are all really pleased to have been able to run the O’Neill British at last and the ideal conditions showed just how much talent we have in UK surfing. The weekend in Devon all went amazingly well and I would really like to thank everyone involved including top sponsors O'Neill, the judges, all the officials, the competitors, the spectators and the Putsborough Beach Café. Massive congratulations to all the surfers who made the podium spots and what a way to see out the year!”

The event was also followed by one of the best parties of 2006 with Anton and Matt of Avalon performing a gig at The Jube that had the whole pub singing and dancing.

O'Neill British Surf Nationals Cancelled for the THIRD time. (Posted Thursday, November 16, 2006 by stu)

Once again O’Neill have had to postpone the O’Neill British National Surfing Championships due to a lack of good waves. Weather experts have concluded that there will be only 3 hours of good waves this weekend which does not give enough time to host the contest. It has therefore been decided to postpone the event for a third time. The event will now take place on the 25th & 26th November 2006.

Keeley Wilkie-Smith, Marketing Manager of O’Neill said “We once again want to thank the public and the competitors for being so patient, and we hope they will all turn up to show their support next week. We have never before had to postpone an event three times, it is phenomenal how unlucky we have
been. At first I thought the luck was on Sam’s side and the weather was
holding out for his return from his honeymoon.”

Sam Lamiroy said “I was delighted with the previous postponement which allowed me to compete in the contest, it is unbelievable that it has happened yet again. I know the weather is likely to be colder but that gives us local guys an advantage. I hope the public will be there to support all of the competitors as we brave the harsh temperatures.”

The event will go ahead as originally planned and will include the Surf Bug VW Festival – due to the colder weather setting in this will be a vehicle display, rather than an overnight camping event.

Stella Hall, Creative Director at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said "It is terribly disappointing that the event has had to be postponed once again but the wave conditions are unfortunately completely out of everyone's control. We hope that the public will very much enjoy all of the action at Tynemouth's Longsands Beach when the event does go ahead."

BSA CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY - (Posted Tuesday, September 12, 2006 by stu)

40 Free Surf Lessons a Day, For 40 Days with GB Team Members

The British Surfing Association (BSA), founded in 1966 to promote the sport of surfing and represent the interests of all surfers in Great Britain and the Channel Islands, marks its 40th anniversary this year. To celebrate this fantastic achievement, starting on the 18th September, the BSA is launching an initiative to enable more people the chance to experience the wonders of this world-wide loved sport by providing 40 FREE beginner surf lessons a day for 40 days with coaching from GB Team members at the International Surfing Centre, Fistral Beach, Newquay.

In addition to the 1,600 free lessons up for grabs in Newquay, the BSA free lesson initiative is also hoped to extend across the 70 BSA approved surf schools nationwide offering a further 40 free lessons locally. If you are interested in booking a free lesson and experiencing the great fun and feeling of catching your first wave, call 01637 850737 and quote BSA 40. Let the ride begin…

The BSA has been at the heart of the British surf scene since 1966 providing grassroots support to its members. The hard work put in from day one, by the BSA and its qualified coaches, is certainly showing dividends not least in the increased awareness of surfing in the UK and the improving standard of British surfing generally but at the sharp end as well.

Over the decades the UK has produced some of the World’s most iconic surfing figures, including Rodney Sumpter, famed with winning several British titles in the 60’s; Viscount Ted Deerhurst, Britain's first professional surfer; and most recently Russell Winter, the first British surfer to compete on the World Championship Tour. These iconic figures coupled with the recent outstanding result of the British Junior Team at the World Surfing Games in California, certainly is a testament to the BSA.

To further celebrate its 40th year, the BSA is translating the power and magic of the ocean to canvas in a gallery, which captures the soul of British surfing over the past 40 years through 40 iconic photographs. Photography plays a crucial role in surfing, with the most memorable images being the ones that capture the raw moments, showcasing why it is we love the sport so much.

In its first ever gallery, the BSA has drawn on the talents of surf and photography legends including, Alex Williams and Paul Gill to ensure an exhibition of unique and inspiring images that capture the imagination and record an iconic moment in the rich and diverse British surf culture from 1966 – 2006.

The gallery will open exclusively to the press on Thursday 21st September from 2pm, with Friday and Saturday open to the general public. To complement the magnificent images on show, the gallery will be displayed in the Thomas Neals Centre, in the heart of Seven Dials, Covent Garden, which is possibly London’s best one-stop-shop for street, surf and skate inspired clothing.

The gallery will then go on display at the BSA’s official 40th birthday party in Newquay on the 30th September where specially invited guests will celebrate their contributions to the BSA. All 40 images will be auctioned off, using a silent bid process throughout both events, with money raised going towards supporting the GB surf team.

The BSA would like to thank its highly supportive sponsors for their continued support over the past 40 years in helping the BSA provide grassroots support to its members, past, present and future, be it through coaching, coach courses, environmental campaigns or the staging/hosting of major surfing events and firmly position the BSA as the voice for surfing in Britain today.

BSA Calls for Iconic Surf Photography to Document Its 40 Year History (Posted Wednesday, August 30, 2006 by stu)

A Picture Says a Thousand Words.

The British Surfing Association (BSA), founded in 1966 to promote the sport of surfing and represent the interests of all surfers in Great Britain and the Channel Islands, marks its 40th anniversary this year. To celebrate this fantastic achievement, the BSA is translating the power and magic of the ocean to canvas in an exhibition, which captures the soul of British surfing over the past 40 years through 40 iconic photographs.

Beginning today, the BSA is pleased to invite submissions for inclusion in their first ever surf photography exhibition, to be held in London at the Thomas Neals Centre, Seven Dials from 21st – 23rd September. The BSA’s intention is to involve and include images from any photographers who have unique and inspiring images that have captured the imagination and record an iconic moment in the rich and diverse British surf culture over the past 40 years.

Photography plays a crucial role in surfing, with the most memorable images being the ones that capture the raw moments, showcasing why it is that we love the sport so much. It could be an image of Rodney Sumpter winning the first ever British National Championships in 1969, surfing the Severn Bore, the British surf team meeting Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace, Viscount Ted Deerhurst becoming Britain's first pro surfer in 1978 or a group of groms gasping for breath after a grueling ride at Godrevy.

The 40 most iconic surf photographs selected, documenting the period 1966 - 2006, will then be officially unveiled at the London exhibition, to celebrate the BSA’s 40th Birthday. The photographs will then go on display at the BSA’s official birthday party in Newquay on the 30th September. The 40 images will then be auctioned off and the money raised will go towards supporting the GB surf team.

Images must be submitted no later than midnight on Friday 1st September and should be sent, preferably, as a high-res image to spencer@soulsports.co.uk If it is an original print/transparency it should be posted (with a SAE so the original photo can be returned after the exhibition) to:

Spencer Claridge,

BSA Gallery, Soul Sports, B5, Enterprise Point, Melbourne Street, Brighton,
BN2 3LH

The following accompanying information is ideally required for the image to be considered for inclusion in the exhibition: Photographers name, name of break/wave, name of surfer, the year the photograph was taken, and captions are optional.

Go NUTZ in Jersey (Posted Friday, May 27, 2005 by stu)

NUTZ SURFBOARDS based in Jersey, Channel Islands, are holding one of their legendary members parties in St. Mary’s, Jersey on Saturday 2nd July. The party will be launching NUTZ’s new range of custom made boards, included a range of hot women’s/girl’s boards featuring super slick graphics, as well as their new collection of tees – all to a whole host of top bangin breaks DJ’s, until four in the morning. Last year’s party was notoriously closed down by the police but this year the NUTZ crew have gone rigorously by the book but NUTZ followers will be far from disappointed.
Unfortunately the gates are only open for the first 500 lucky members to arrive as well, as the prestigious guestie so no sneaking around the back (we’ve been told there’s gonna be beefy security around but when has that ever stopped us!).
Check out their new website (www.nutzsurfboards.com) which unfortunately doesn’t let you peek a sneak at the new designs just yet but gives you some cool surf/snow/skate footage to check out. To join the mailing list and find out more about Nutz, email info@nutzsurfboards.com

The Best of British Surfing! (Posted Tuesday, October 7, 2003 by stu)

Fistral Beach (UK), October 5th, 2003 -- Britain became a surfer's paradise this weekend as over 300 surfers descended on Newquay's Fistral beach for the 2003 Billabong British Nationals . The UK's longest running and most prestigious surf competition was the biggest ever with record entries battling out to be the UK number one and scoop the £1000 prize money.

Surfers faced tough conditions with 2-3ft on-shore waves and a stormy swell crashing round Fistral all weekend, making for an exciting weekend of surfing action. The first surprise came early as reigning champion Shaun Skilton went out in round one, leaving the contest open for anyone. It was eventually Newcastle's Sam Lamiroy who carried off some fantastic surfing to be crowned British Champion. Four times champion Lee Bartlett finished second with third place going to Joss Ash.

This year's contest also saw more girls hitting the waves with three women's divisions. Current English champion Robyn Davies won the Women's division, with Megan Chapman taking the top spot in the ' Girls', and Tracey Boxall winning the senior women's.

The future of British surfing looks bright with some great surfing in the Grommet, cadet and youth category. Stuart Campbell took the title in the under 12's category, with Tom Butler winning the under 14 and Reubyn Ash winning the under 16.

The competition has been running since 1969 and has been sponsored by surfing's biggest supporter Billabong for the past 7 years. This year's Billabong British Nationals is the most successful ever, demonstrating the quality of surfers the UK has to offer. Dave Reed, National Director of the BSA comments: "This year's been a fantastic event with our highest ever entrants and some brilliant surfing. The performance level has dramatically increased over the last 12 months and that has been evident in all finals.".
