Filmmaker Questionnaire

When and why did you start filming?

I started when I was 15, I used to hire out a video camera for the weekend with friends and make short films. When I was 17 I saved up and bought my own camera and started filming skating and BMXing, filming snowboarding was a pretty obvious progression when I started that too.

What is most satisfying type of footage for you to capture on tape?

Some of my favourite footage is the complete back country lines. Though I have been getting really into follow camming people off kickers recently which I think can look good.

Do you have a favourite line/ trick that you have filmed?

James Stentiford, hitting a natural hip in untouched powder, shot from above

Are you happy to hand over footage to be edited by other people or do you like to play a hand in the post production as well?

I often film with an idea in mind of how I would like it to be edited together, I really liked the way that Ikandi (Tom and John Eldridge) edited their films so I was happy to let them use my footage, though I would normally want to stick my ore in when it comes to the edit. I often find that the editing can be just as rewarding as the filming.

What are the pros and cons of filming the sports you do?

The good thing about filming is that it can really help with your riding as you can look back over the footage and work out where you have been going wrong. The cons are that you can miss out on doing the best lines in order to get the best shots.

Do you prefer filming for sport videos or television?

I would always prefer to film for Videos, though I keep a stock of last years footage that I can usually sell on to for TV use to make a bit of extra cash.

What are your plans for the future with filming?

I see a gradual progression from my snowboarding to filming, currently I keep a pretty even balance between the two, I would really like to have a go at filming with 16mm at some point. I also want to make more non fictional short films as they are the best fun.

What advice would you give to people that wanted to start filming?

Try to see if you can borrow a camera, you will see that if you are going to get good footage that you will have to make sacrifices to your own riding in order to get the best angles. If you are really serious about it then I would advise getting at least a 3 chip camera, the quality difference is very noticeable and if you ever get the chance to sell the footage it will be acceptable for television.

What are your top safety tips when riding?

When riding powder, use a tranceiver and practice with it regularly. There is no point in having one if you don't know how to use it.

What advice have you got?

Here's something for people learning to drop cliffs. Take a good look over it first so that you know what you will be facing when you launch off it, look below the landing point and spot your line once you have landed. The most important thing is not to think of the landing but what you are going to do beyond it, most people think that they are coming in too fast and let themselves crumble and fall on impact.
